The First 24-Karat Gold Proof Coin to Feature a Sitting President: The Trump 250th Anniversary Gold Coin

The U.S. Mint's first 24-karat gold proof coin to feature a sitting president: one ounce of pure gold, $250 face value, struck at West Point and dual-dated 1776 ~ 2026.

The First 24-Karat Gold Proof Coin to Feature a Sitting President: The Trump 250th Anniversary Gold Coin

I’m Stephen Pfeil, founder of Global Coin. I’ve handled a lot of gold coins in my career. Very few of them made history on the day they were struck. This one did.

For America’s 250th birthday, the United States Mint has issued the President Donald J. Trump 24K Gold Proof Coin: one full troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold, struck at West Point, dual-dated 1776 ~ 2026, carrying a $250 face value. It is the first 24-karat gold proof coin the U.S. Mint has ever struck that depicts a sitting president.

Read that last line again. In more than two centuries of American coinage, it has never happened before.

Why “First” Matters in This Hobby

Collectors pay for firsts. The first year of a series, the first strike of a new design, the first coin of its kind. Firsts get written into the reference books, and coins that are written into the reference books stay in demand.

This coin has more than one.

  • First 24-karat gold proof coin to feature a sitting president. The U.S. Mint has never done it.
  • Only the second U.S. coin ever issued with a $250 denomination. That’s a face value you don’t see on American coins.
  • A one-year anniversary chapter. It is part of the Semiquincentennial program, the same once-in-a-lifetime 250th anniversary story as the rest of the 2026 releases.

Why It’s the Most Controversial Gold Coin in U.S. History

There’s a long-standing tradition that a living president doesn’t appear on U.S. coinage. Washington declined. For most of American history, the portraits on our coins have honored people after their service, not during it.

The 250th anniversary changed that. The Mint first broke with tradition on the 2026 Trump dollar, and the Mint’s rolls sold out almost immediately. Now it has done it in an ounce of pure gold.

People have strong feelings about this coin, in both directions. Our customers are Republicans, Democrats, and everyone in between, and here’s what I tell all of them: controversy is what makes a coin famous. Coins that start an argument are the ones people are still talking about fifty years later. Whatever you think of the decision, this coin is a piece of American history the moment it leaves West Point.

The Coin Itself

Obverse (heads): A portrait of President Donald J. Trump, with LIBERTY across the top, IN GOD WE TRUST in the field, and the dual date 1776 ~ 2026 below.

Reverse (tails): The Presidential Seal.

It’s struck as a proof: the dies and planchets are specially prepared and each coin is struck more than once, which gives you deep mirror fields and frosted devices. Each coin ships in the Mint’s presentation case with a certificate of authenticity.

Gold You Can Hold, History You Can Pass Down

The Trump dollar is a copper, nickel and zinc coin. This one is a full ounce of 24-karat gold. Same story, very different metal.

That matters. I’ve written about why central banks are buying gold at a record pace and why China just shut down paper gold. Physical gold is having its moment. A coin like this gives you both sides of what I love about this business: the metal is real, and the history is real.

Where It Fits in a 250th Anniversary Collection

The Semiquincentennial is the biggest program the Mint has run in my lifetime. If you’re building around it, this coin is the gold centerpiece.

Our Price: $100 Less Than the U.S. Mint

Here’s the part I’m proudest of. Global Coin is offering this coin for $100 less than the U.S. Mint’s issue price. You get the same coin from the same mint, in the same case with the same certificate, and you keep a hundred dollars.

Our supply is limited. When a coin sells out at the Mint, the people who waited end up paying more on the secondary market.
