Peace Dollars: A Timeless Symbol of Hope and Resilience

The Peace Dollar commemorates the end of World War I. Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci designed it, using his wife Teresa as the model for Lady Liberty. The reverse shows a bald eagle at rest atop a mountain, clutching an olive branch — a powerful symbol of hard-won peace.

The most valuable include the 1921 high relief (the only year struck in high relief), 1928 Philadelphia (lowest regular mintage at just 360,649), and 1934-S. The 2021 centennial restrike is also becoming a modern key date due to its limited production and historical significance.

Values range enormously based on date, mint mark, and condition. Common dates in circulated grades start around the silver melt value, while key dates in top certified grades can command thousands. A certified 1928 in MS66 or higher, for example, is a five-figure coin.

Peace Dollars offer a shorter series (24 regular dates vs. hundreds for Morgans), a distinctive Art Deco aesthetic, and generally lower entry prices. Many collectors pursue both as complementary pillars of American silver dollar history — the Morgan representing the Wild West era and the Peace reflecting post-WWI optimism.
