Some visits leave a mark on a place. Michael Gaudioso's visit certainly did.
On April 27, Michael (Mike) Gaudioso was at Global Coin for the Beyond Relief Buffalo Nickel release. Not at a trade show. Not behind a table at a convention. Here, in our office, with our staff, on the phone with our customers. Of the eight companies selected for this release, we were the only one that hosted him.
Gaudioso is the engraver of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 reverse, the most widely collected silver coin in the world. The Beyond Relief Buffalo Nickel is his latest work. Five ounces of fine silver, 33mm of sculptural depth, limited to 175 certificates. He came to sign each one.
The Man Behind the Work

You don't have to spend long with Michael Gaudioso to understand where the work comes from. His passion for sculpting and design is immediately apparent. Not in a rehearsed, promotional way, but in the way he lights up mid-sentence when the conversation turns to craft. It is clear he thinks about this constantly.
He is, by any measure, a humble man. Generous with his time and genuinely funny.
One story stopped the room. Early in his career at the United States Mint, Gaudioso wasn't fond of the commute. So he solved the problem the way only a certain kind of person would: he brought a blowup mattress and started sleeping in his office. Even after his first week of doing it, when a security guard nearly discovered him, he wasn’t deterred from doing it for the next three years. He told the story with the ease of someone who has made peace with the absurdity of it. Everyone laughed.
That is Gaudioso. Self-effacing, unpretentious, and the kind of person who happens to engrave coins that will be held and passed down for generations.
A Day at Global Coin

We showed him around the office, and he took his time with it, curious about the operation and the people behind it. He met with each member of our staff individually, and every interaction felt easy and natural. There was no formality to it. He simply fit.
The team recognized him immediately as one of their own: straightforward, knowledgeable, genuinely enthusiastic about coins and the people who collect them. Not everyone who works at this level wears it lightly. He does.
At one point during the visit, he got on the phone with a few of our customers. He talked to them about the Beyond Relief Buffalo Nickel: what went into it, what to look for, and what it means to him. Then, without any prompting, he offered an open invitation. If they were ever in Florida, look him up. He would give them a personal tour of his studio.
That is not a promotional gesture. That is just who he is.
The Signing

Gaudioso signed each of the 175 Beyond Relief Buffalo Nickel certificates by hand. He also signed certificates for select Silver Eagle holders, and several copies of Modern Numismatic Masterpieces, each signed alongside his own design.
Each of the 175 signatures is a small, deliberate act. The collectors who hold those certificates now have something that will not be replicated.
What Comes Next

This visit was built around the Beyond Relief Buffalo Nickel. But the story does not end there. His next design is already underway. And while we cannot share details yet, if this visit is any indication, what comes next will be worth the wait.
We will be the first to tell you when the time comes.
