The Man Who Reimagined the Silver Eagle
In 2021, the United States Mint unveiled the most significant redesign in the Silver Eagle's 35-year history. The sculptor responsible for the new reverse — the one now struck on every American Silver Eagle produced today, the most widely collected coin in the United States — was Michael Gaudioso. After a distinguished career at the U.S. Mint that spanned Congressional Gold Medals, the America the Beautiful series, and the First Spouse Gold Coin program, Gaudioso began exploring a question no one in numismatics had seriously attempted to answer: how far beyond traditional relief could a coin actually go?
This is his answer.
Beyond Relief™ — A New Category of Coin Art
The Coming To Life™ Buffalo Nickel is the inaugural piece of the Beyond Relief™ series by XceptionalMint™. Every coin ever struck — from ancient Rome to modern proof sets — has been defined by the physical limits of traditional relief. The metal rises, then returns to flat.
Gaudioso broke that boundary entirely. With 33 millimeters of sculptural depth, the American Bison doesn't rest behind the surface of this coin. It emerges from it. James Earle Fraser's iconic Buffalo Nickel design — unchanged since 1913, one of the most beloved in American numismatic history — has been transformed into full three-dimensional sculpture. The buffalo is no longer a coin. It is a sculpture made of silver, born from a coin.
5 Troy Ounces of .999 Fine Silver. Certified Perfect.
Struck in 5 troy ounces of .999 fine silver and certified by NGC at the highest possible grade — MS70 Antiqued — this piece carries both the weight of precious metal and the authority of the world's largest numismatic certification service. The Antiqued finish is unique to this series: it draws shadow into the deep sculptural recesses and illuminates the raised relief in a way a brilliant finish cannot, giving the piece a dramatic, museum-quality presence from every angle.
The Advanced Release designation marks coins certified by NGC within 30 days of issue — the recognized numismatic standard for first-release collectibility, valued by collectors who know that early certification history matters to a coin's long-term story.
175 Exist. Numbered and Dual-Signed.
The total worldwide mintage of the Coming To Life™ Buffalo Nickel is 5,000. Of those 5,000, only 175 carry two signatures — and every single one of those 175 is available exclusively through Global Coin.
Each dual-signature coin includes:
- An exclusive release letter and certificate of authenticity hand-signed and personally numbered 1,001 through 1,175 by Michael Gaudioso — sculptor of the Type 2 American Silver Eagle reverse
- A coin holder bearing the autograph of Anna Escobedo Cabral, former U.S. Treasurer, whose signature appeared on every piece of U.S. currency in circulation during her tenure as the 42nd Treasurer of the United States
The numbering begins at 1,001 — placing every Global Coin acquisition within a specific, traceable sequence. This is not mass production. This is 175 documented, authenticated pieces.
