The Most Controversial Dollar Coin in American History
Global Coin is proud to offer one of the most exclusive, collectible, and historic dollar coins the United States Mint has ever produced — the 1776–2026 Semiquincentennial President Donald J. Trump $1 Coin, bearing the rare Independence Day “JULY 4TH” Privy Mark — now certified by NGC in a coveted Advanced Release “RealTrump” holder.
A Coin That Changed History
On September 2, 2026, the United States Mint released a dollar coin unlike any other in modern American numismatic history. The coin carries dual dates 1776 ∼ 2026 to mark America’s 250th birthday, displays the numeral 250 embedded in the Presidential Seal on the reverse, and — most controversially — bears the likeness of President Donald J. Trump on the obverse, making it the first U.S. circulating-quality coin in modern history to feature a living, sitting president.
The legal debate was immediate. The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 explicitly prohibits a living president’s image on U.S. coinage, building on the Thayer Amendment of 1866. But the Treasury Department, led by Secretary Scott Bessent, invoked the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330) — signed into law during President Trump’s first term — which grants the Treasury Secretary authority to issue a $1 coin in 2026 with designs “emblematic of the United States Semiquincentennial.” Critically, this law restricts living portraits only on the reverse, with no corresponding restriction on the obverse where Trump’s portrait appears. The Treasury issued a statement: “On this momentous anniversary, there is no profile more emblematic for the front of this coin than that of our serving President, Donald J. Trump.”
The Ultra-Rare July 4th Privy — Only 250,000 Struck
Of the 9,000,000 Trump dollars struck at the Philadelphia Mint, only 250,000 carry the special “JULY 4TH” privy mark — struck on Independence Day, July 4, 2026, and randomly distributed within standard rolls and bags. That’s fewer than 1 in every 36 coins. Unlike the standard issue, privy-mark coins were never offered separately — they were quietly inserted at random, making each one a genuine find for the collector fortunate enough to acquire one.
Demand was ferocious. Major coin dealers pre-ordered millions of coins — one California dealer alone acquired over one million coins for $2.44 million. The Mint’s entire allocation of 150,000 rolls and 50,000 bags sold out almost immediately after the September 2 launch. Privy-mark examples in MS66 and above are already trading at significant premiums on the wholesale market.
NGC Advanced Release “RealTrump” Certification
Through our deep connections in the numismatic community, Global Coin secured privy-mark coins from the earliest available supply and immediately submitted them to NGC for certification. These coins have been certified in NGC’s official Advanced Release “RealTrump” holders — a special NGC label created exclusively for this landmark issue, confirming that the coins were received and certified within the early release window. This designation is among the most sought-after for this coin and will only grow in significance as the series matures.
Grade Scarcity: MS67 Is the Peak
Because these coins were struck to circulating-quality standards and packaged in standard rolls and bags, experts widely agree there will be no MS68, MS69, or MS70 examples of the Trump dollar with July 4th privy. The population currently grades in the MS62–MS67 range, with MS67 representing the finest known specimens. Every grade point above MS64 represents a dramatic reduction in supply — making top-grade examples among the rarest and most competitive coins of 2026.
Coin Design
The obverse portrait of President Trump was engraved by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna from an official White House photograph by Daniel Torok. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the dual date 1776 ∼ 2026. The reverse, designed and sculpted by former U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro, features the Presidential Seal with 250 on the shield, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and ONE DOLLAR.
