Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pirate Money made of real coins that pirates actually used?
Yes! Our Pirate Money collection features authentic coins from the 16th–18th century Golden Age of Piracy. These include Spanish reales and cobs — the actual 'pieces of eight' that pirates, merchants, and colonial powers used across the Caribbean and beyond. Each coin is certified by NGC.
What were 'pieces of eight' and why were they called that?
Pieces of eight were Spanish 8 reales silver coins — so named because they could literally be cut into eight 'bits' for smaller transactions. They were the world's first global currency, accepted from the Americas to Asia, and directly inspired the U.S. dollar system. One 'bit' = 12.5 cents, hence 'two bits' = 25 cents.
How do I know a pirate coin is authentic and not a reproduction?
Every coin in our Pirate Money collection is certified by NGC, which authenticates its age, origin, and condition. Each arrives in a tamper-evident holder with detailed attribution. You're receiving a genuine centuries-old artifact — not a replica or modern reproduction.
What makes Pirate Money such a popular gift?
Few collectibles capture the imagination like holding a real coin that may have sailed on a Spanish galleon or changed hands in a Caribbean port town. Pirate Money makes an unforgettable gift for history buffs, adventure lovers, or anyone who appreciates tangible connections to the most colorful era of maritime history.
